Can you really get excited about a Shovel Holder. Darn Right! ... The history of this product goes back to the mid '90s when I manufactured the first prototype Axe & Shovel Holder (still in use today). At that time, I had a need to remove my dirty shovel from inside the vehicle and importantly have a shovel or axe handy when needed around the campsite or on the 4WD track. There were other shovel holders on the market at the time, but these were only suitable for vehicles with steel rims mounted to the rear door and the design only allowed for the shovel holder to be mounted to the outside of the steel rim. This design was a problem for me as I had alloy rims on my Four Wheel Drive and bolting a shovel holder to the outside of an alloy rim was not possible.
Having an Engineering and Manufacturing background, I came up with this unique design which enabled the mounting plate to be fixed permanently to the original spare wheel mounting bracket behind the alloy rim. A spigot protrudes through the centre of the rim and the Holder secures to this spigot with two socket-head cap screws.
Small design improvements suggested by friends and customers over the years, have included the introduction of a rubber strap to reduce vibration, a securing chain on the retaining pin to stop it falling into the mud and a padlock to deter thieves. A wall mounting bracket was also designed store the Axe and Shovel Holder in the garage when not in use. These have helped make this Australian made product a very useful piece of equipment for Four Wheel Driver enthusiasts and campers. Please remember that this product was designed to carry a shovel (spade) and axe together. If carrying only one or the other, the rubber strap will not be tight enough and you may end up losing your gear. In this case, you can pad it out with rubber or something similar. Finally, I would like to mention the added versatility of this design which will assist you when changing your Four Wheel Drive in the future. A replacement mounting plate can be purchased separately for a minimum cost, as the Shovel and Axe Holder itself, is generic for all vehicles.
Happy 4WDriving.
